When in Rome...

sunny 85 °F

We thought the name of this post was appropriate because it fit our actions today, especially in the evening (but we will get to that later).

We started off today by enjoying a food tour of Bangkok (not that an activity like this should surprise anyone).  We were able to sample many different dishes that touched on the various influences around the city and culture, from Chinese crispy duck to Indian curry, as well as regional dishes like shredded fried catfish, and a pork with mint salad.  The local buns with a vanilla flavored herb and coconut sorbet were especially good considering the warm weather.

After all of the eating, we thought it would be a good idea to take a boat up the river and visit some of the local temples.  Wat Pho was quit extensive and housed the largest reclining Buddha.  After our tiring day and seeing this position, we really wanted to recline next to it.

Despite this, we ventured across the river to see Wat Arun.  While the Temple of Dawn (name according to translation) did not have as much to see as Wat Pho, it did have stairs.  And whenever we see stairs, we just have to climb them.  At the highest available elevation, we were provided with an impressive view both up and down the river, and also to the other side.

We ended our evening as a true local.  We went to see a friend living in Bangkok (Bill's Muay Thai trainer) in the northern part.  When we got off the subway, we walked one block and were met by Sit AND HIS SCOOTER.  We thought we were meeting him somewhere close for dinner and a beer.  Rather, he motioned us to get on his scooter.  BOTH of us.

So the 3 of us on his scooter went off riding down the street through traffic, passing buses, making tight turns, and speeding over bumps.  When we reached the destination, it was a street "cafe."  Not exactly what we expected but were willing to try it out.  For dinner, we had amazing soup, pork and local vegetables in a garlic sauce, and a whole fried fish.  This was all washed down with several cold beers.  All of this for $24.  Not expecting to have such an adventure, we did not bring the camera.  This is a mistake that we will only make once because this was an amazing experience.

So cool that you knew someone and got a local's perspective. Nick and I watched a show on McDonalds restaurants around the world and I saw that one, so funny. So happy you are having fun. Love you lots.
